Brief 2 - KTP - Evaluation
The first half of the year has got off to a slow start. The projects I'm working on are all live briefs and after a few tutorials I've realised a lot of my briefs don't allow me to full exploit my rationale. My desire to work with clients has given me a huge amount of experience in dealing with other people and finding a compromise between my own ideas and theirs - however this as left me with a compromised portfolio, and less time to do something about it. This brief in itself has been quite slow - and at first I wanted to blame things with the client, as there were problems with budget and the KTP package didn't end up going to print. There was also a lack of copy to put in the brochures, another reason I felt I couldn't carry on with the brief.
Looking back I realise it was my own fault I didn't resolve this brief quicker - Its my job as a designer to produce the work and it would have been very easy to take things into my own hands instead of letting other issues hold me back. This has been a very valuable lesson. You can't always waste for the client to tell you what they want - to a certain extent you just have to give them it.

KTP - Flyer Development
So, the difficult thing about this brief is the need for a flyer as soon as possible.
The flyer will be included in the pack a when that has been finalised, but for now it's needed urgently for an event later next week.
This means that some decisions about the actual pack have to be made before it is designed.
I've never really been happy with the colour scheme I chose early on with this brief - it looks fine on screen but no matter how much I mess about with them, the colours just look pants once printed out.
So - I printed out these and asked the guys what they thought - the colour they kept coming back to was the purple, and I think purple is the best choice as well. It's not too masculine or feminine, and it's not got too much of a corporate feel to it.
I totally ripped off the type and layout of the previous package just so they could get an idea of how it could look. We had a brief chat about it and I then went on to tweak the design as follows -

KTP - Flyer Development
More flyer variations.
I feel a little stuck with this brief. I keep picking up live briefs in a bid to try and escape the agony of thinking of my own briefs and figuring out what I actually need to do. All my work is being compromised by the restrictions placed upon it by others, and myself. This KTP brief is a prime example in that I expect they want something corporate feeling, something that feels standard and to some extent - safe. This means that my work will only ever be as good at that.

KTP - Research
After last week's meeting - the guys have decided to opt for a square format package, as they feel a more creative format is the best way to emphasise the college's creative qualities. I had chosen an A format publication in the first place purely because it would be easier for them to add or take away elements - as most printed documents conform to these standards. I'm glad they have decided on a square format publication, as this allows much more creativity on my part.
Anyway - they basically asked for a reproduction of the package shown below. This is the format they would the the final publication to be, and the current flyer must also fit within this.

KTP - Proposal Boards
Sent this PDF through to Steve last week - had the feedback I had was generally positive, and in response he sent me some copy for a flyer he'd like printed in preparation for a KTP event held some time in the next few weeks.
KTP - Development
Final colour palette chosen based on the breakdown of information.
I picked these colours to reflect the fun and vibrant nature of the creative industries - but kept a muted grey/black accent colour to give a more corporate feel, and to reflect the professional nature of the KTP idea.

Wasn't sure at this stage whether the pencil icon was working - I wanted an icon/logo that was representative of all the courses across the board, and I think the pencil is one of the few pieces of primitive equipment that is used by everyone in all sectors..
Too abstract - Bit too much like pizza slices..
Once I was happy with the elements of the design I took them across to Indesign to get a proper layout and grid sorted..
KTP - Development
Had a quick browse through the official KTP website - http://www.ktponline.org.uk/ and found that the key graphic used was based around the idea of 3 components coming together. The 3 circles below are found throughout their promotional material, and I thought this was a good starting point for my own work.
Started thinking about colour palettes aswell - as the information pack needs to be divided into subsections, the best way of doing this is through colour.

KTP - Development
The most critical part of this brief is the information breakdown - and though there isn't much as of yet to go on, I feel it's part of my job as a designer to consider how best to break this information down into sections that are easy to digest, as this will have a huge effect on the overall visuals of the finished product.
I decided to break it down into the following sections -
I decided to break it down into the following sections -
- A manual for generic information, and an introduction to the concept of KTP's
- A manual for Communications Design (Advertising, Vis-com, Graphic design)
- A manual for Fashion & Textiles (Fashion, Printed textiles)
- A manual for Photography & Digital Media (Photography, Digital film, games & animation)
- A manual for Fine Art & Craft (Furniture, Fine Art & possibly Interior Design/Millinery)

Effektive - LOA+DS Exhibition
Again with an indication towards the KTP brief, the branding for this exhibition by Effektive uses striking colours against a primarily monochrome backdrop. Different colours are used across a range of publications to help you easily differentiate between them - and it seems an obvious choice for the KTP package.. I'm a little nervous about choosing colours however, always have been. But I'll see how it works out!
